MOTS-c and PCOS (PMOS): A New Perspective on Women’s Health

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often face a complex web of metabolic and hormonal challenges. Recent research highlights a promising new piece of the puzzle: a mitochondrial peptide called MOTS-c.

Recent research compared 40 women with PMOS to 40 healthy women of similar age and body weight. The study measured MOTS-c levels in two places:

  • ·      blood samples
  • ·      thigh muscle tissue.

MOTS-c is a peptide produced by mitochondria, the energy-producing units of our cells. Think of it as a natural messenger that helps the body use sugar more efficiently, support healthy fat metabolism, and maintain steady energy levels.

The Takeaway:

Women with PCOS had significantly lower levels of MOTS-c than the healthy group. In blood tests, it was about half as much: 220 pg/mL compared to 498pg/mL. MOTS-c measured in muscle tissue was lower too.

Even more interesting, women with lower MOTS-c levels tended to have higher testosterone and cholesterol levels. That’s a big clue that this peptide might be linked to some of the metabolic struggles tied to PCOS.

Why Does This Matter for Women?

PCOS is one of the most common hormone issues out there, impacting everything from periods and weight to skin, energy, and fertility. For years, the advice has mainly been “just diet” or "birth control," but this study offers a new perspective. Finally, research on women!

It’s one of the first to look inside women’s muscles and show that the problem might be beyond just the blood or ovaries; it could also stem from mitochondrial function.

MOTS-c, a mitochondrial peptide, seems to play a role in the hormonal and metabolic balance. When levels are low, it’s associated with higher male hormones and cholesterol; classic signs of PCOS. Scientists are finally paying more attention to how mitochondrial health affects women’s health, opening new pathways for understanding and potentially treating PCOS.
